Explorer using 99% of CPU usage

[Resolved] Explorer using 99% of CPU usage - Tech Support Guy Forums

I noticed suddenly my system performance was very slow, opening an map with 5 layers was taking huge amount of time, If I am correct, this started happening, when I tried to terminate an popup while visiting an website.

after initial diagnostics I found out IExplorere.exe in the task was taking 99% of the processor, that was creating the problem, hence other apps didn't had sufficient process and had slowed down.

I was able to fix this by deleting this key in registry file
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler"

Background music:

Pleasant weather, rained last evening

Initiative for Energy-Efficient Computers

An initiative by Intel and Google to save the Earth from Global Warming.

Intel and Google announced a partnership with 25 companies and organizations: Climate Savers Computing Initiative. "The goal of the new broad-based environmental effort is to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting aggressive new targets for energy-efficient computers and components, and promoting the adoption of energy-efficient computers and power management tools worldwide."

Urs Hölzle from Google mentioned that a desktop PC wastes half of its power, a server wastes one-third of its power and 90% of the computers don't use power management settings.

The group hopes to improve the energy efficiency by 50% until 2010 and to reduce the CO2 emissions from computers by 54 million tons per year (equivalent to the removal of 11 million autos or planting 65,000 km2 of trees).

The initiative will try to improve the Energy Star requirements. "Our Initiative starts with the 2007 Energy Star requirements for desktops, laptops and workstation computers—including monitors—and gradually increases the efficiency requirements over the next four years. The Initiative's standard for these machines, which takes effect in July 2007, requires power supplies to be at least 80% efficient for most of their load range. It also puts limits on the energy used by devices when inactive, and requires systems to be shipped with power-management features enabled."

An energy-efficient computers will cost $20-$30 more, but the energy savings will offset the cost in the first two years. As more computers will be sold, they'll become a standard and you won't see any premium price for them. So the next time you buy a computer, make sure it has the Energy Star logo or other distinctive mark that identifies energy-efficient equipment.

60 Alt + F4 (<9>) FileCloseOrExit Closes the current document, or if no documents are open, quits Word. Horrible command, as it makes it a long winded business to quit Word. But there's a simple solution - assign Alt+F4 to FileExit instead.
61 Alt + F4 (Word 97) FileExit Quits Microsoft Word and prompts to save the documents (does intercept the menu item, but not the keyboard shortcut, or the x button. An AutoExit macro is usually a better way of intercepting this).
62 NOT Ctrl+N!! FileNew Creates a new document or template (brings up the dialog). Note that: Word pretends that Ctrl+N is assigned to FileNew but it isn't, it's assigned to FileNewDefault You can fix this in Word 2000 by assigning Ctrl+N to the FileNewDialog command. In Word 97 the only way to fix it is to create a macro called FileNew (to do this, press Alt + F8, type "FileNew" without the quotes and Click "Create". The macro will automatically contain the code needed to make it work).
63 Ctrl+N FileNewDefault Creates a new document based on the Normal template.

65 Alt F, U FilePageSetup Changes the page setup of the selected sections

75 Alt O, E FormatChangeCase Changes the case of the letters in the selection
76 Alt O, C FormatColumns Changes the column format of the selected sections (brings up the dialog)
77 Alt O, D FormatDropCap Formats the first character of current paragraph as a dropped capital (must select it first)
78 Ctrl+D FormatFont Brings up the Format + Font dialog
79 Alt + Shift + R FormatHeaderFooterLink Links the current header/footer to the previous section (but does not intercept the button on the Header Footer toolbar)

81 Alt O, S FormatStyle Applies, creates, or modifies styles
82 Alt O, T FormatTabs Brings up the Format Tabs dialog
83 Shift + F5 GoBack Returns to the previous insertion point (goes back to up to 3 points, then returns to where you started; this is one of the most useful shortcuts of them all. Also useful when opening a document, if you want to g straight to where you were last editing it)
84 Ctrl + > GrowFont Increases the font size of the selection
85 Ctrl + ] GrowFontOnePoint Increases the font size of the selection by one point

Keeping your Passwords Secure

Many people think it's hard to have a good password because it should be complicated and, as a result, hard to remember. When you create a new Google account, you can read some nice tips that prove you can create a strong yet memorable password.
* Include punctuation marks and/or numbers.* Mix capital and lowercase letters.* Include similar looking substitutions, such as the number zero for the letter 'O' or '$' for the letter 'S'. * Create a unique acronym.* Include phonetic replacements, such as 'Luv 2 Laf' for 'Love to Laugh'.And some things to avoid (that could be summarized as: don't use passwords that are easy to guess).
* Don't use a password that is listed as an example of how to pick a good password.* Don't use a password that contains personal information (name, birth date, etc.)* Don't use words or acronyms that can be found in a dictionary. * Don't use keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234).* Don't make your password all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters.* Don't use repeating characters (aa11).And, of course, the obvious: "never tell your password to anyone (this includes significant others, roommates, parrots, etc.), never write your password down, never send your password by email."So, the next time when you create a new passwords, think of a quote you like, an old saying (maybe not in English or your native language), use punctuation and replace some letters with similar digits or other characters. You can also use short forms for some of the words. There are many places where you can test show strong a password is. One of them is available if you go to Google.com , sign out and then click on "sign in". Choose "create an account now" and type your password. Google will indicate you if your password is strong, fair or weak. Then you can use the password wherever you need it. If you can't come up with a new password for each new site you sign up, at least try not to use the same password you have for your mail account (many people sign up using the email address: myemail@yahoo.com and choose the Yahoo password). If that site has security problems and your account is compromised, your Yahoo account will be compromised as well. Also, be aware that most browsers offer to store your passwords, so they can auto-complete them. Many times they are not stored securely and anyone who has physical access to your computer can find the passwords (for example, go to Firefox > Tools > Options > Security > Show passwords > Show passwords again). That's why it's a better idea to use password managers like Password Safe, KeePass, RoboForm, that store your passwords securely and can manage any kind of password. In Firefox and Opera you could also use a master password, but there are commercially tools that can recover master passwords. A small summary and some other tips:* create strong passwords that mix digits, punctuation, capital and lowercase letters by thinking at a memorable quote and making some replacements or using acronyms* don't share your passwords with anyone * don't use the same password for all your accounts* try not to use the built-in password managers from your browser. Use safer tools, if you really need a password manager.* change your password from time to time * try to stay away from sites that don't use secure authentication (look for https in the address bar)* sign out when you finish a session

SIW - System Information for Windows

SIW - System Information for Windows - is a free* software that shows a lot of information about your computer. Most of the data can be obtained by running different tools included in Windows, but this program displays everything in one place. You'll get information about the operating system and the installed patches, the software licenses, drivers, Windows services, codecs, open files, saved passwords, hardware information (motherboard, CPU, memory, video card, ports) and some useful tools (like Eureka, that reveals passwords from some applications). The software doesn't require setup, so you can copy it to your USB drive and use it when your uncle Dan says there's something wrong with his computer. You can export all the data in different formats and use the program from the command-line.
